Ralph Bakshi who quit animation in the late 1980s in part because of a cocaine controversy involving the Mighty Mouse cartoon character is now working on his first animated film in 15 years, The Last Days Of Coney Island.
Bakshi says animation is finally open to dealing with adult themes but he doesnt like what has happened to hand- drawn animation in the last few years, where you have brilliant artists working on lame projects.
Hes also going back to the drawing board because hes seeing revived interest in his animated work, which sells very well on DVD, and hes received new offers to do films by the members of the rap group The Wu-Tang Clan.
Besides working on The Last Days Of Coney Island, Bakshi will be honored with a retrospective at the American Cinematheque museum in Hollywood on April 29 through May 1.
