Magazine Caught Between Rock And A Hard Base

SAN FRANCISCO (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Baseball and punk rock might seem like strange bedfellows but there’s one magazine that doesn’t mind being caught between rock and a hard base.

It’s called Chinmusic and features articles focusing on baseball players discussing music and musicians discussing ballplayers.

Editor Kevin Chanel created the magazine because, as he puts it, “at a certain age, most guys decide to either dedicate themselves to playing sports or to playing music.”

Chanel says some ballplayers are accomplished musicians, such as New York Yankees outfielder Bernie Williams, who is an acclaimed jazz guitarist; and Oakland A’s pitcher Barry Zito, who writes songs similar to Dave Matthews and Ben Folds.

Sadly, many ballplayers aren’t tuned in to good music. Chanel says too many of them like “crappy bands” like Toby Keith or Three Doors Down and laments how many power hitters overdose on “tough guy rock” like Sevendust and Slipknot.

Although Chinmusic is dedicated to uniting the sports world and the music community, Chanel admits it’s harder than trying to hit a Randy Johnson fastball because, as he puts it, “Many athletes tend to treat their musician teammates as pariahs.”
