Firm Cheese Can Cut It

Friday, February 12, 2010 17:08 GMT

CHESTER, England (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Only one type of cheese in Chester, England, can truly cut it.

On Tuesday (Feb. 16), the annual Chester Food and Drink Festival launches with its famous “Cheese Rolling Championships.”

Teams must roll big hunks of cheese down a street while avoiding obstacles like hay bales and scarecrows to reach the finish line.

According to even organizer Charlotte Talbot, the best type of cheese for the competition is the town’s local Cheshire Cheese.

Its density, firmness, and shape make it prime for rolling, though there are still setbacks from time to time.

Talbot says that if teams don’t carefully guide the cheese along the route, it can “get out of control” and go rolling into the crowd.

To avoid any wayward cheese, she suggests teams stay close to their hunks and make tight turns on the course.

Because the race is so competitive, Talbot says you won’t find any teams stopping for a nibble of cheese as they roll.
