Use Gifts And Time As Currency

LONG BEACH, Calif. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Using gifts and time as a form of currency could help build a stronger economy.

Evolver, an environmental collective, is giving its two cents about the global economy and providing an ecological alternative to currency.

Instead of trading dollars for goods and services, they think a “gifting system” – where gifts are used in lieu of currency – is the way to go.

On January 21st, the collective will test out this theory with their “Give It Up!” event at the Space and Light Studio in Long Beach, California.

They’ll host a “green elephant” gift exchange where attendees give each other homemade presents and will attempt to run a “time bank.”

With the time bank, people will earn “time dollars” for services rendered and spend their invisible cash on other stuff in return.

If their alternative currencies prove successful, there’s no reason why a “gifting economy” couldn’t work worldwide.

If anything, that would make labor valuable again.
