English Reaches Million Word Mark

AUSTIN, Texas (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – English is nearing a milestone – soon, there will be one million words in the popular language.

According to Paul JJ Payack of The Global Language Monitor – a company that analyzes worldwide word trends – the English language will reach 1,000,000 words by June 10, 2009 at 10:22 AM GMT.

Since English is the top global language, Payack anticipates that the millionth word will appear in India, China, or wherever there’s a fusion of English with another dialect – a fertile ground for word creation.

He figures the millionth word will be something related to pop culture – maybe a term having to do with the Swine Flu – and must be widespread enough to have at least 25,000 citations in the media.

Payack says a new English word is created every 98 minutes, and with 14.7 new words a day, the language is growing faster than ever before – even faster than when Shakespeare was around.

He attributes the quick development of words to the Internet, which spreads terms at lightning speeds to all corners of the globe.
