Gardening: The Latest Money-Saving Trend

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Seed money goes a long way in today’s soiled economy – especially if you actually buy seeds with it.

Cookbook maven Katie Lee Joel says growing a home garden is an effective way to stay healthy and save money on groceries.

She says one tiny tomato plant yields about 12 pounds of produce, and one packet of seeds costing $1.95 grows more than 300 pounds.

Joel figures gardening can save you roughly $1,000 a year.

She assures that a garden is easy to grow and can be done by putting in 10 minutes a day to water it and pick out weeds.

Besides helping folks save money, Joel says gardening provides hours of “zen” relaxation.

Additionally, growing your own fruits and veggies leads to healthier eating because, in her words, “Nothing tastes better than something you grow yourself.”

Gardening can also get to the root of America’s hunger problem.

Joel urges folks to “grow for the greater good” through the ScottsMiracle-Gro Campaign by planting one extra row in their gardens and donating the produce to local food banks.
