For his book Mr. America: How Muscular Millionaire Bernarr Macfadden Transformed The Nation Through Sex, Salad, And The Ultimate Starvation Diet (Harper), a biography on bodybuilding magnate Bernarr Macfadden, author Mark Adams attempted the muscle mans various diets.
To step into Macfaddens shoes, Adams did a three-day water fast, walked for two hours every day for a month, chewed his food 100 times before swallowing, and did a two-week raw food diet, which caused a major stink.
Adams explains, I noticed the smell of green apples following me around. Then I went on a run and realized, Oh my God. Its me! I asked a diet doctor and she said, You are what you eat. It even confused my dog.
Though the process was unpleasant, Adams says the aftermath was a big payoff because he has stopped craving the naughty food he loves.
