The 30th Annual Fulton Oysterfest happens this Thursday (Mar. 5) through Sunday (Mar. 8), and the highlight of the event is the oyster eating competition.
Organizer Beverly Garis says spectators gather in throngs to watch guys, gals, and kids guzzle down oysters, but it isnt always pretty.
Contestants have five minutes to eat as many shelled oysters as possible, and must sit still for five minutes afterwards to make sure the oysters dont come back up.
Although Garis has never seen anyone puke during the event, shes seen folks get sick immediately afterwards.
However, the strongest stomachs prevail.
The male record holder for the contest has downed 300 plus oysters, while the eight-time female champs record is 169 and the kids division record is 80.
Garis says the key to winning is to swallow the oysters straight from a cup with little or no chewing.
