Joaquin Phoenix’s ‘Hoax’: A Tough Call

AMHERST, N.Y. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Everyone is wondering if Joaquin Phoenix’s rap career is a hoax, and one expert says it’s a tough call.

Last October, Phoenix announced that he was quitting acting. Since then, he’s grown a bushy beard and claims to be pursuing a rap career.

After a bizarre interview with David Letterman this past Wednesday (Feb. 11), the Internet is buzzing with theories that Phoenix’s schtick is an elaborate hoax being filmed for a documentary.

Hoax historian Joe Nickell says it’s a tough call.

While there have certainly been intricate hoaxes in the past – like the “Cardiff Giant” hoax where a fake “petrified giant” was exhumed from the ground, or the man who formed a fake committee that was “outraged” by naked animals – Nickell says there’s no proof either way that Phoenix is pulling a fast one.

Nickell believes Phoenix’s situation may be more of a rumor or “conspiracy theory” rather than hoax.

Unfortunately, every hoax is different, and Nickell says there are no standard warning signs for a duping.
