Lewis plays an offbeat detective with a Zen-like attitude on the drama series Life, and has been brushing up on Zen the enlightening Buddhist practice in real life.
He jokes, For the entire first season I had to wear a wig on the show because I ran off to a Buddhist monastery and shaved my head. I was trying to get into character.
In reality, Lewis has been reading books about Zen to learn about its teachings and chatting with a friend whos a practicing Buddhist monk.
Life producers even gave Lewis a set of tapes by late British philosopher Alan Watts, who specialized in the meaning of life and higher consciousness.
Says Lewis: Watts was somewhat of a crackpot, but hes entertaining. I wake up listening to him.
The second season of Life premieres tonight (Sep. 29) on NBC.
