Kooky Cooking Contest Strives For ‘Egg’-Cellence

OATMAN, Ariz. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Eggheads in Oatman, Arizona, are cooking up a kooky Fourth of July feast.

The 18th Annual Sidewalk Egg Frying Contest gets cracking on Friday (Jul. 4), and nearly 50 folks will gather at high noon in the 110-degree heat to see who can fry an egg on the pavement the quickest.

It takes more than time and temps to take home the trophy.

Cement chefs often get very MacGyver with their morning meal, using magnifying glasses, mirrors, foil, and even eye glasses to cook the competition.

According to spokesperson Jackie Rowland, the eggs don’t have to be incredible or edible – it’s more about the “egg”-centric chefs’ costumes.

She says, “Showmanship counts for a lot. We’ve never had anybody actually eat the eggs.”

If the breakfast bash isn’t your cup of tea, you can watch the four staged gunfights that happen every day of the year, or stroll over to Main Street, where about 15 wild burros roam free.
