Mule Day Kicks Into Tennessee Town

COLUMBIA, Tenn. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – One four-legged festival in Columbia, Tennessee, is bringing a bunch of asses into town.

Mule Day 2008 kicks off April 1-6, and will fill the town with nearly 700 mules, who will compete in pulling, agility, and even beauty contests that look for mules with the best faces, hips, and bods, all to be crowned “King Mule” and head up next year’s mule-drawn parade.

There will also be a mini-mule show for animals 38 inches and smaller, and the chance to purchase your own ass at the mule sale.

Big or small, the hard-working animals being honored aren’t as dumb as people think.

Spokesperson Harvey Spann says, “A mule is considered a dumb animal, but these mules have a little education. They’re trained well.”

And while mules are notorious kickers, Spann says Mule Day is a safe celebration, as long as you don’t make an ass off yourself and meet the animals head on.

He says, “They’ll kick, but only if you blindside ’em. Just don’t sneak up on ’em or make any sudden moves.”
