Hunger Strike Is For The Birds

NILES, Mich. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – A pet store manager in Niles, Michigan, is starving for reptiles and birds.

George Blake runs Ewert’s Warehouse Sized Pet Store, and last Friday (Mar. 21), he began a 40-day hunger strike to raise awareness for abandoned birds, fish, and reptiles.

Blake – whose 18-year-old son is fasting with him – currently weighs 240 pounds, and expects to lose 60 pounds by the finish date, May 1.

Although he cites weight loss, lowered blood-pressure, and mental clarity as fasting benefits, Blake insists, “This isn’t for health reasons, it’s to let people know they can bring their unwanted animals to pet stores.”

This isn’t the first hunger strike for Blake and his boy – in 2006, they went 39-and-a-half days without food in the Arizona desert for spiritual reasons.

Still, he admits, “I talked to my doctor about it. He thinks I’m crazy.”

During the fast, Blake will also be writing songs about animal abandonment for his band, Dark Knight, with a pet store performance planned for May 3.
