Self-Loathing for Beginners (Santa Monica Press) parodies the self-help genre by offering hilarious tips to achieve happiness through hating yourself, and according to author Lynn Phillips, the best role models are in the celebrity spotlight.
Phillips outlines several celebrity self-loathers, including Angelina Jolie, who compensates for her self-loathing by doing good humanitarian deeds, and Oprah Winfrey, who teaches others to be thin and glamorous while fighting the same battle herself.
There are also icons like Janet Jackson, who constantly creates new selves to spite, and high-powered politicians like Dick Cheney, who Phillips calls Self-loathing impaired because he cant understand what there is to hate about himself.
Phillips says, The whole purpose of celebrity culture is that theyre better than you. But they hate themselves too. Its a vicious cycle.
If you want a head start on hating yourself, Phillips recommends turning off the TV and looking in the mirror, saying, Start with the body, it cant fight back.
Self-Loathing for Beginners is out now.
