Lend Frogs A Helping Hand On Leap Day (Feb. 29)

SILVER SPRINGS, Md. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – This Leap Day (Feb. 29), frogs are hoping to leap off the endangered list.

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums has named 2008 the Year of the Frog, and on Leap Day, they’re kicking off their year-long fight to save their slimy friends from extinction.

Around 100 zoos all over the world will participate in events like frog calling, leapfrog contests, and amphibian-themed sing- a-longs.

According to event spokesperson and conservation biologist Shelly Grow, the largest threat to frogs is habitat loss, and she says people should build ponds and toad abodes in their homes to make frogs feel welcome.

She also asks that people keep their cats and dogs from roaming free because they tend to have “stressful interactions” with frogs.

She explains, “You have to be responsible and make sure your pets don’t eat frogs because they’re disappearing faster than mammals and have a huge impact on the world.”
