Mari Lyn Henry and Lynne Rogers, authors of How to Be a Working Actor: The Insiders Guide to Finding Jobs in Theatre, Film, and Television (Watson-Guptill), say that a successful career in Hollywood takes hard work, discipline, and cold, hard cash.
Henry says, You cant just pack a suitcase and head west with $100 in your pocket. Its not the ideal way to start, even if its the way Brad [Pitt] and Charlize [Theron] did it.
According to Henry and Rogers, Hollywood hopefuls often expect too much too soon, and there is one desperate, sexy act that wont get them ahead in the business.
Henry says, If people think having sex with a director will get them a job, theyre terribly mistaken.
Rogers adds, Theres always someone that wants to leap over barriers, but we [the actors union] put them in their place.
