No Shrimpy Eaters Allowed At Arizona’s Shrimp Festival

GILA BEND, Ariz. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Seafood lovers in Arizona are getting ready to cram crustaceans like crazy.

The 5th Annual Desert Shrimp Festival is reeling in folks this Saturday (Nov. 3) in Gila Bend, Arizona, with a shrimp contest that will leave attendees with a full gut and a saucy face.

Seafood freaks will be competing in the shrimp eating contest, where competitors will have to peel and pass as many boiled shrimp as they can in two minutes, but according to spokesperson Cyndi Eisenberger, the shrimp showdown wasn’t always that safe.

She says, “We had to change the contest to a timed event because it used to be all you can eat, and the record was 296. People were making themselves sick trying to beat it.”

For folks who can’t handle choking down crustaceans by the boat load, there’s also a bobbing for shrimp contest that gets everyone sauced up.

Says Eisenberger: “We make everyone bob the shrimp out of bowls of cocktail sauce, so their faces get totally red. The sauce is spicy, so we don’t make them dunk their whole heads in.”
