Mosquito Festival Gets Texas Buzzin’

CLUTE, Texas (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – The town of Clute, Texas, is buzzing with excitement this weekend (July 26th-28th) as the 27th Annual Great Texas Mosquito Festival swarms into town.

More than 18,000 bug buffs are expected to buzz into the town known for it’s massive mosquitos this year for contests like the “Mosquito Call” and “Best Mosquito Legs,” where contenders roll up their pant legs to determine who’s got the most insect-like gams around.

The fest will get even buggier when the town’s chief insect, a 25-foot-tall mosquito mascot named – what else? – “Willie-Man-Chew” swoops in to oversee the activities.

And though townies are itching to attend, they’ll be happy to know that the bothersome biters at the fest aren’t on the pest list.

In event organizer Lin Richey’s words, “Only the friendly mosquitos that don’t bite are invited.”

But just in case some nasty nibblers do sneak into the fest, Richey says to steer clear from bananas, since mosquitos love them.

She adds, “Garlic keeps ’em away, but nobody wants to go around smelling like garlic.”
