Today (Aug. 8) Is Tu B’Av: The Jewish Valentine’s Day

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Today (Aug. 8) is a heartfelt day for Jewish singles: It’s Tu B’Av (Too By Av), which is called the “Jewish Valentine’s Day.”

The day is especially popular in Israel and single women traditionally celebrate it by wearing white dresses and dancing in the vineyards while single guys pick the ladies they want to wed.

The holiday is catching on with Jewish singles in the States as well, according to Gail Laguna, a spokeswoman for the Jewish dating website JDate.com.

She says the website is promoting the day both online and with concerts and festivals in select cities.

Regardless of what country it is, Laguna says giving flowers is appropriate, especially red roses but she says it’s all about finding a life mate – or “beshert” – not just a date for the evening.

Some people who are on the website may have a harder time finding a match than others, such as the person who built a fake profile for a “Mel Gibstein” featuring Mel Gibson’s recent mug shot.
