Inventor Produces Some Dope Speakers – Literally

SAN RAPHAEL, Calif. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – An inventor in San Raphael makes really dope speakers – and he has Thomas Jefferson to thank.

John Harrison is the inventor of the ToneTubby, a brand of speaker that uses hemp – the non-psychogenic cousin of marijuana – in the cones, instead of plain old wood pulp paper.

Harrison came up with the idea in 2001 after reading that Thomas Jefferson wrote a draft of the Declaration of Independence on hemp and figured if it was durable enough for that document, surely using it in speakers is a sound idea.

Harrison says the hemp cones are less likely to blow out and don’t have the piercing high notes associated with other speakers.

Harrison started out making his speakers for guitarists like Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton and Kirk Hammett, but now is branching out into the consumer market.

For instance, he’s really high on a brand of car speakers called “HempHop,” that he says is able to produce lower sounds than any other speaker on the market. As he puts it, “You can actually hear the bass tones.”
