Swamp Soccer Tournament Kicks Off July 12

HYRYNSALMI, Finland (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – The World Cup soccer tournament in Germany has had its share of controversy but it’s nowhere near as dirty as an upcoming match in Hyrynsalmi, Finland.

The 8th Annual Swamp Soccer World Championship will kick off July 12 and that means 5000 players from nearly 220 teams will be sloshing the soccer ball around fields that have been soaked in muddy water.

Nearly 650 scheduled matches will be played in the town’s Swamp Arena, which consists of 15 fields that are slightly smaller than regulation soccer fields.

The event is intended for soccer die-hards, but organizer Jyrki Vaananen says hockey players and cross-country skiers also get a kick out of running around in the muck.

While soiled drawers, water-filled shoes and mouths filled with dirt will be common, Vaananen says injuries won’t be because, as he puts it, “You can’t run very fast.”
