G.I. Joe Invades The Big Easy

NEW ORLEANS, La. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – The Army Corps of Engineers won’t be the only soldiers in New Orleans this weekend because thousands of G.I. Joes will also be on the march.

Starting Friday (June 30), the Big Easy will host a big gathering of G.I. Joe buffs and as many as 2000 regular Joes who collect G.I. Joes will be in attendance.

This year marks the 10th annual International G.I. Joe Collectors Convention, and the invasion will officially begin when more than 300 G.I. paratrooper action figures are parachuted by collectors from atop the 17-story Loews New Orleans Hotel, the site of the convention.

As organizer Brian Savage puts it, “The opening ceremonies will make it feel like G.I. Joes are an invading army.”

Naturally, the conventioneers will get all dolled up but events also include diorama contests, where action enthusiasts can set up their G.I. Joe’s in action scenes using props -- and something dubbed “Wheels For Joe,” where collectors create vehicles to match G.I. Joe themes.

Also on the schedule is an appearance by Sgt. Slaughter, a four-time wrestling champion, who as Savage puts it, “A real live personality who is an actual G.I Joe action character.”
