Ritchie Valens’ 65th Birthday Is Real Family Affair

PACOIMA, Calif. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Tomorrow (May 13) marks the 65th anniversary of the day rock legend Ritchie Valens was born.

Although the man who sang “La Bamba” died in 1959 in the same plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, his music and memory are being kept alive by his younger cousin, Ernie Valens.

Ernie was born 13 years after the plane crash but has felt an affinity with Ritchie ever since he was 15.

Now, 21 years later, he says interest in Valens’ music is bigger than ever, especially since “La Bamba” has become such a popular kids song.

Naturally, Ernie will sing “La Bamba” tomorrow, along with “Happy Birthday,” at a 65th birthday party for his cousin at the Ritchie Valens Recreation Center in Pacoima, California.

But Ernie isn’t the only member of the family who will be rocking out at the party. Ritchie’s youngest brother, Mario, will be playing blues harmonica with his own band.
