Although the man who sang La Bamba died in 1959 in the same plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, his music and memory are being kept alive by his younger cousin, Ernie Valens.
Ernie was born 13 years after the plane crash but has felt an affinity with Ritchie ever since he was 15.
Now, 21 years later, he says interest in Valens music is bigger than ever, especially since La Bamba has become such a popular kids song.
Naturally, Ernie will sing La Bamba tomorrow, along with Happy Birthday, at a 65th birthday party for his cousin at the Ritchie Valens Recreation Center in Pacoima, California.
But Ernie isnt the only member of the family who will be rocking out at the party. Ritchies youngest brother, Mario, will be playing blues harmonica with his own band.
