Pop Rocks was invented back in 1956 by chemist William A. Mitchell, who was trying to make instant soda pop by trapping carbon dioxide in hard candy tablets.
The idea fizzled and the candy sat on lab shelves until 1976 when someone decided to turn it into candy.
The 1976 launch of Pop Rocks is one of the most successful candy introductions of all time, but it also launched one of historys strangest urban legends.
It seems a rumor started that Mikey from the old Life Cereal ads had his stomach explode after eating a combination of Pop Rocks and Coke.
Although theres no truth to the tale, the Federal Drug Administration had to set up a special hotline to tell nervous parents there was no risk of tummy explosion from the candy.
The candy took a hit in sales but has managed to remain popular. Even so, Pop Rocks spokesman Steven Style admits the urban legend still pops up regularly.
However, he says most people consider it ridiculous and, in fact, most of the candys new consumers learn about it from, of all people, their parents.
