Johnny Cash Birthday Bash To Be Held In Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Johnny Cash won’t be around to celebrate his 74th birthday on Sunday (Feb. 26), but that’s not stopping several Brooklyn residents from having a party for the Man In Black.

This will be the Second Annual Johnny Cash Birthday Bash, where Brooklyn bands gather to play Cash tunes for fans.

Event organizer Alex Battles says he’ll try to stay true to Cash’s spirit by wearing black while his band Whisky Rebellion plays. He jokes, “I’m singing ‘Man in Black’ and it’s kind of hard to do that in a pink shirt.”

Battles had planned to take the stage with a drummer-less lineup reminiscent of Cash’s earlier days, but says the venue is too big to go acoustic and he can’t seem to mic up his guitar with a dollar bill strung through it the way Cash sometimes did to make a rattling sound.

He’s not beating himself up over it, though. He says he’d rather have the music sound good than “me trying to create some sort of museum piece that sounds terrible.”
