Gallagher Hopes To Have Smash Hit Watermelon-Shaped DVD

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Gallagher became a smash hit back in the late ’70s and early ’80s by smashing watermelons with sledgehammers.

Now, he’s hoping to make a splash with a new audience with a DVD collection shaped like a watermelon titled, appropriately enough, Gallagher: The Smashing Watermelon Collection.

Gallagher estimates he’s smashed more than 12,500 watermelons on stage but even he admits the bit has been both a blessing and a curse.

Although it’s a surefire closer, he admits the skit puts him “into commas.”

In his words, “They’ll call you a ‘watermelon- smashing comedian’ rather than, say, ‘the first guy to pick on stupid people’ or ‘the first to make fun of women’s insanity with shopping.’”

Still, he plans to keep doing the bit because, as he puts it, “Everything needs a climax, even sex.”

Gallagher hopes the collection introduces him to a new audience and while he may never reach his former heights, he’s okay with that because, “I don’t want to be liked by everybody because I don’t like everybody.”
