Six Degrees Of Cigarette Lighters

LONDON (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – You’d think now wouldn’t be the best time to hand out 250 free lighters in a London tube station, but that’s exactly what one artist is doing as part of an art project called Six Degrees of Smoking.

This Sunday (Aug. 14), London-based artist James Robert Ford is handing out colorful, cheap lighters” at London’s Waterloo station labeled with instructions for the smoker to light a cigarette with the “art lighter,” get a digital photo of themselves smoking and then send it to Ford via camera phone or email including their name and location.

Then they’re asked to pass the lighter on to another smoker so the task can be repeated.

Although security and tensions are high in London because of the recent bombings, he doesn’t think he’ll have any problems.

As he puts it, “It would be interesting if I got stopped by a policeman with a sub-machine gun. I don’t think it’s illegal.”

Ford hopes he’ll eventually get thousands of pictures for a photographic installation and thinks it would be “really cool” if he ended up with a photo of Kevin Bacon.
