Kids Know Ozzie Smith More For His Son Than His Career

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Ozzie Smith is a 15-time All-Star and has won 13 Gold Gloves, but kids these days know him for a far different reason: He’s the father of an American Idol contestant.

Smith says his son, Nikko – who made it to the final nine in the popular talent search – has overshadowed his accomplishments with the younger generation.

In his words, “I’ve gotten more attention in the last four or five weeks than I got in 19 years of baseball.”

Still, the former St. Louis Cardinals shortstop says it doesn’t bother him.

He knows he will hear “That’s Nikko’s dad” from a lot of kids tomorrow (Apr. 26) when he hosts a field trip to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York.

But while Nikko possess a talented voice, Smith says don’t expect him to belt out any tunes for the kiddies because, as he puts it, “Nikko got the style from me, but the singing definitely came from his mom.”
