Jamaicans Yammering About Yam Festival

KINGSTON, Jamaica (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Folks in Jamaica love yammering on about things, especially yams.

In fact, yams will be the topic of the upcoming Trelawny Yam Festival, which starts March 21 and culminates with Grand Yam Festival Day on March 28.

The locals celebrate the sweet potato that was first brought to the Caribbean from the West Coast of Africa as food for captured slaves.

Festival highlights include competitions to find the most unusually-shaped yam, best quality yam and heaviest yam. The current record-holder is a yam which weighs 480 pounds.

But festival organizers say the most popular events are the Best-Dressed Goat and Best Dressed Donkey Competitions. That’s where folks dress up their goats and donkeys in things like cargo pants, dresses, sweaters and hats.

Organizers expect 25,000 people to attend the event. It should be their largest turn-out ever – not including the asses.
