Jewish funnyman Sasha Baron Cohens performance in Bruno has created a fury of controversy for his many racist remarks and outlandish stereotypical gay behavior.
However, film and comedy expert Rabbi Simcha Weinstein says Cohens racially insensitive jokes, like asking a mother if he can photograph her child dressed as a Jew being wheelbarrowed into an oven by another baby dressed as a Nazi, is actually good for the Jewish community.
He explains, There are cringeworthy Jewish gags throughout the film, but the subjects end up making fools of themselves. It shows there are more real-life, shallow Brunos out there than many of us care to believe.
By pointing out the way people react to harsh anti-Jewish humor, Weinstein says Cohen teaches everyone a lesson on their perceptions.
Still, he wont be showing Bruno during a sermon anytime soon.
