The cafe located on Route 66 is known for its Ugly Crust pies, which, according to creator Joann Harwell, taste much better than they look.
Harwell began making the pies about 10 years ago when she attempted to recreate her grandmothers recipe for No- Fail Pie Crust.
Her pies tasted great, but Harwell couldnt seem to make the crusts as pretty as her grandma had, thus, Ugly Crust pie was born.
Over the years, Harwells crusts have gotten a little better but patrons still prefer ugly.
She doesnt have a specific technique to making the crusts, though she can reveal that her secret ingredients are love, Crisco, and a glass pan, not tin.
Harwell believes anyone can make her Ugly Crust pies. Her cookbook, Favorite Recipes, is available at the cafe for those who want to give it a go.
