Museum Remains Open In Cyberspace

ATHENS, Ga. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – The Georgia Museum Of Art is currently shut down for renovations, but it’s open in the virtual world.

The GMOA has launched a virtual museum in Second Life – the popular 3D cyber world – that’s almost an exact replica of the galleries at the real life museum in Athens, Georgia.

Since the brick-and-mortar museum is currently closed for expansion, spokesperson Jenny Williams says the virtual museum is a way for visitors to stay connected.

Their cyber characters – or “avatars” – can walk around like they would at the real museum and check out art from its permanent collection.

There are ways to pan and zoom into the masterpieces, and Williams says they’re working to install an audio feature that plays background information about the art to mimic a real live tour guide.

Williams and other museum employees are also on Second Life, so if visitors have questions she says they can stop her avatar and ask away.
