The Roots Avoid ‘Late Night’ Cliches

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Grammy-winning hip-hop group The Roots are now late night TV regulars, but you won’t catch them uttering cheesy catchphrases on the air.

Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson, Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter, and the rest of their crew are the house band on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, which premieres March 2 on NBC.

According to Thompson, The Roots don’t have a signature Late Night catchphrase just yet, though taking cues from ’90s talk show king Arsenio Hall is tempting.

He laughs, “We should say, ‘Let’s Get Busy!’ – just like Arsenio.”

However, bandmate Trotter says they’ll restrain themselves.

Trotter explains, “We’re trying to avoid any Arsenio cliches because it’d be real easy to go there!”

Instead, The Roots want to be known for their “flexibility” as a house band, which is why they’re willing to play any type of music, including classical and rock.

Host Jimmy Fallon better be prepared to jam with the band because according to Trotter, he’ll be putting Fallon on the spot and “exchanging rhymes with him on the mic.”
