The Fancy Rat and Mouse Show is crawling into Riverside, California, on Saturday (Jan. 24), where stage parents will show off their purebred rats.
To be named Best-in-Show, a rat must have a long body, a round tail thats as long as their body, well-placed ears that arent bent, large eyes, and have a pleasant personality.
Much like a beauty queen puts Vaseline on her teeth to have a brighter smile, owners find ways to make their furry show rats look dazzling to the judges.
According to spokesperson Dale Taylor, contestants often wipe down their rat with a silk scarf because it gives them a shiny, sleek coat.
They also rub the rats tail with hand lotion so it looks pretty.
Taylor says good breeding is what separates fancy rats from typical feeder rats, and can lead to a more attractive rat with an excellent personality.
