Sam Waterston Not Imprisoned By ‘Law & Order’

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Despite his long run on Law & Order, Sam Waterston can walk away whenever he wants.

Waterston, who’s played District Attorney Jack McCoy for 15 seasons on the long-running cop drama, says he never thought he’d be on the show for so many years.

He laughs, “I had no idea how long the show was gonna last. I thought I’d only be with it for a year.”

Though his stay has been a little longer than expected, Waterston remains happy playing his character because, “I’ve never felt imprisoned. They’ve given me a long leash, and I’m allowed to sign up year after year. I’m free to stay or go.”

But Waterston does have one regret about staying on the show for so long.

He says watching himself age over the course of Law & Order’s run has made him think, “Why didn’t I enjoy myself more? I didn’t look any better then than I do now.”

The 18th season of Law & Order premieres tonight (Nov. 5).
