In Tell the Truth Until They Bleed: Coming Clean in the Dirty World of Blues and Rock n Roll (Backbeat Books), author Josh Alan Friedman reveals the truth about notorious blues and rock rebels like Keith Ferguson, a member of the Fabulous Thunderbirds, who lived on a junkie compound in the Texas hills, and Rick Sikes & The Rhythm Rebels, who robbed banks between gigs.
Friedmans family ties came in handy when researching Leiber and Stoller, the legendary songwriting duo behind hits like Hound Dog and Stand by Me.
Friedmans father was friends with Jerry Leiber, and Friedman spent a summer with the reclusive songwriter, learning about his mob ties, how he drag-raced James Dean, and how he wrecked his car while riding with two black hookers.
Friedman says, It would be a [Martin] Scorcese film if it was revealed in all its ugly glory. It was so much fun to hang out with Jerry. Hes one of the craziest people Ive ever met.
Tell the Truth is out now.
