Daniel Kopulos co-owner of a New York City pet store called Uptown Birds is hesitant to let go of the rare and exotic pets in his store because, as he puts it, its not my job to send animals to their doom.
Kopulos, a former zookeeper, puts customers through a tough, three-week interview period, forcing them and their friends and family to visit the animals before he decides whether or not he will sell them.
He explains, People dont realize how much care pets need. Having a bird is like having a child, and it has to be incorporated in everything you do.
And Kopulos intense scrutiny has often lead many buyers to flip him the bird.
He says, People get really annoyed, and will be like Just sell me the fish, or But its my chameleon, but I tell them Its not yours until I sell it to you.
