Thats according to Canadian mammal expert Donna Naughton, who says that if Santas reindeer were real reindeer, theyd be females and pregnant.
Naughton explains, Male reindeer drop their antlers by the end of November, but the females keep theirs until June because they have to be able to fight males away from their food sources.
And if having a sexual identity crisis isnt enough for the reindeer, chances are theyre probably pregnant, because Naughton says 90 percent of female reindeer are fertilized during rutting season in October.
But dont worry about the reindeer hurting their babies carrying around St. Nick and his bag of goodies theyve got magic on their side.
Says Naughton: Im not worried about them hurting themselves or their babies because theyre magic. I mean, they can fly, right? Size and weight are immaterial at that point.
