‘American Idol’ Producer Just Wants To Make Great TV

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – When it comes to American Idol, producer Nigel Lythgoe has one clear objective: Make great television.

Lythgoe – who’s been producing Idol for six seasons – says his number one priority on the show isn’t to find America’s next great singer, but to make America’s greatest show, even if it means being unfair with how much screen time each contestant gets.

He explains, “I’m not concerned with making sure every contestant gets equal screen time. I can’t include all of them. If they’re boring as hell in front of a camera we’re not going to show them on TV. That would be stupid.”

And Lythgoe makes no secret to contestants about what rakes in the ratings.

Lythgoe says, “We’re so honest with the singers on the show, that we say things like, ‘Hey, if you’re going to cry, go ahead. Just make sure you turn this way so we can get you on camera.’ They understand and America gets good TV.”

And bickering judges Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and Simon Cowell also help the Idol drama.

Lythgoe adds, “They’re a pitiful, childish, dysfunctional family. It’s really wonderful to see!”

American Idol Season 7 premieres January 15 on FOX.
