The 4th Annual Bugfest Critter Cook-Off will buzz into North Carolinas Museum of Natural Sciences tomorrow (Sept. 14), and two chefs will face off in a battle to see whos the creme de la creme of critter cooking.
The bug bakers will be whipping up a three-course meal featuring insect ingredients, including mealworms, grasshoppers, crickets, and ants, and according to the museums assistant communications director, Emelia Cowans, the crickets can be a real pest during grub time.
She says, The crickets are all right up until the legs. They kind of get stuck in your teeth and are a pain to get down.
However, judges this year will be sampling creepy crawler concoctions like cricket gumbo and batter-fried grasshoppers, and should have no problem keeping them down.
Says Cowans: The judges are used to the bugs. Their eyes do water up a little bit, but they keep it down. Theyre good sports.
