New Jersey Is Crazy For Crabs

OCEAN CITY, N.J. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Everyone will be crabby in Ocean City, New Jersey, next Wednesday (Aug. 1), when the 34th Annual Miss Crustacean hermit crab beauty contest claws onto the boardwalk.

Pinching their way towards the pageant crown, about 60 crabs of all shapes, sizes, and genders will be vying for the coveted title of Miss Crustacean, which event organizer Mark Soifer believes will be won by a crab donning Hollywood-inspired attire.

Past winners have included “Crabapatra,” who was carried into the beauty pageant by toga clad owners, “Crabpunsel,” who sported flowing locks of hair, and last year’s crusty cutie, a “Pirates Of The Crababbean” themed beauty queen.

But while the pageant gets crabby, Soifer isn’t expecting any typical “stage moms” to pressure the contestants during their shining moments.

Once the crustacean queen is crowned, they’ll be escorted down a flowery runway as the crowd sings the traditional “Here Comes Miss Crustacean” pageant anthem.

Another event that will please even the crabbiest crab is the intense Cucumber Rind-Cup Race, where about 150 crabs will race one another for first place.

But crabs better not have any fishy tricks up their claws, since as Soifer puts it, “We test them for Searoids, to make sure they’re not taking enhancements to win the race unfairly.”
