Matthew Perry: Secret Tennis Pro

? NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Matthew Perry is a successful actor, but a long time ago the smarmy ``friend'' had dreams of swinging with the best of them on the tennis court.

According to New York-based reporter Baird Jones, Perry says he loved tennis as a teen and practically went pro in the sport.

Perry – who made the surprising confession to Jones over cocktails at the Tropfest At Tribeca film festival party (Apr. 29) – says while living in Ontario, Canada, he was number 17 in tennis at age 13.

Perry recalls, “I had a nice, fast serve and I was a good volleyer, but I had a weak backhand. I wasn’t good enough to turn pro so I had to find something else to do, which is why I went into acting.”

And while Perry never got to fulfill his tennis fantasies, he did get an opportunity to play a quick match with hot-headed tennis legend, John McEnroe.

He adds, “I got to play at Wimbledon on a side court against John McEnroe. I got one game, and it was 6-1 off McEnroe at Wimbledon.”
