Orlando, Florida, Heats Up Times Square

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – New Yorkers commonly visit Florida in the winter, but today (Feb. 15) residents of Orlando, Florida, are returning the favor in Times Square.

That’s because Orlando is temporarily taking over Military Island and setting up an “island oasis” featuring various officials and critters associated with the city.

That means Orlando mayor Rich Crotty will be on site, as well as Walt Disney World resident Mickey Mouse, some penguins from Sea World, an astronaut from the Kennedy Space Center and even an alligator or two from Gator World.

There will also be some jousting knights from Medieval Times but Orlando tourism official Gary Sain jokes that circumstances may force them to compete on top of the gators instead of horses.

Still, Sain predicts the Florida visitor who will be most welcomed by New Yorkers is the heat, especially since officials are predicting temperatures in the 20s.

But not on Military Island, where environmental experts are setting up a heating unit so that it will be 70 degrees in the oasis.

Sain admits that getting New Yorkers to visit Florida in the winter is pretty easy, but he says the event is designed to “plant a seed” in their heads about Orlando that he hopes will grow throughout the rest of the year.
