Marquette University Declares Dave Barry ‘Patently Offensive’; Barry Agrees

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Some people don’t have a sense of humor, such as a philosophy professor at Marquette University, who recently declared a Dave Barry quote to be “patently offensive.”

The administrator reprimanded Ph.D. student Stuart Ditsler for putting the following Barry quote on his office door: As Americans, we must always remember that we all have a common enemy, an enemy that is dangerous, powerful and relentless. I refer, of course, to the federal government.

Within days after Ditsler put the quote on his door, philosophy department chair James South declared it “patently offensive” and asked it be removed since “hallways and office doors are not ‘free speech zones.”’

For his part, Barry says he has no recollection of the quote or the point he was trying to make but says he’s not sure what the “patently” in “patently offensive” means.

In addition, he says if someone is offended by that remark “than it’s hard to imagine what WOULDN’T offend them.”

Barry has sent Ditsler an e-mail apologizing for “getting him in trouble” but is hard at work writing up his annual Christmas gift guide which he promises will be “patently offensive to anyone at Marquette University.”
