TNA Wrestling Star Body Slams Anti-Immigrant Racism

SAN DIEGO (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Most people realize professional wrestling is fake, but some pro wrestlers are grappling with real political issues in the ring.

Case in point: A Cuban-born wrestler named Konnan, who has helped institute immigration-inspired storylines on the Spike TV show, TNA: iMPACT!

For instance, one storyline played off the national immigration work stoppages that took place across the U.S. earlier this year.

During one episode, he and his Mexican colleague, The Truth, refused to work during a match scheduled for the May 1 “Day Without A Mexican Protest.”

But while immigration is a polarizing issue in the U.S., the work stoppage plotline was well received by both Hispanic fans and those who simply like rooting for rebels.

Still, Konnan says there’s a legacy of racism that hasn’t been erased from pro wrestling yet, but he’s trying.

In his words, “ [TNA Wrestling officials] know I’m very sensitive [to immigration issues]; it may have been ignorance in the past, but now they come ask my opinion about this.”

TNA: iMPACT! airs Saturdays.
