Artist Turns Baseball Cards Into Art

SAN DIEGO (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Some people consider baseball cards an investment but an artist in San Diego prefers to see them as paintings.

LaVern Brock combines his love of baseball cards with his love for art by turning them into brand new photo collages.

For instance, Brock’s card collage of the jersey of former San Diego Padres star Tony Gwynn uses cards from every single one of his former teammates and there’s one of Greg Maddux using every card ever issued with the future Hall of Fame pitcher’s mug.

Brock started making the collages six years ago to honor Gwynn, his favorite player, and soon discovered there was enough of a market for him to do it fulltime.

Each piece costs at least $5000 and takes at least four weeks to complete. Much of that time is spent combing through thousands of cards trying to find the right players or the right era.

Sometimes, that means cutting up a valuable card in the name of art, such as a piece dedicated to the Los Angeles Dodgers that includes a cut-up Sandy Koufax card worth $200.

But it’s worth it when Brock sees a customer’s reaction. He says when Gwynn first laid eyes on his collage, he spent ten minutes talking about each player in the collage.
