‘L.A. Law’ Star Creates Latina Nancy Drew

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – A former cast member of L.A. Law now has a novel idea: Write mystery novels based around a latina Nancy Drew.

Michele Greene – who played Abby on the long running NBC legal drama – has just written Chasing The Jaguar (Harper Collins), a teen-oriented mystery novel that centers around a 15-year-old sleuth named Martika Galvez.

Like the Nancy Drew character, Martika solves mysteries, but Greene admits her teenage detective is a little more street savvy, since she lives in a gang-ridden neighborhood and her parents are illegal immigrants.

Greene is part Mexican, Nicaraguan and Irish and says she created the Hispanic heroine, in part, to counteract the way that latinos are normally portrayed in the media.

As she puts it, “If I have to see one more movie about a latin male who is trying to box his way out of the barrio, I don’t know what I’ll do.”

The books have just hit stores and while there’s no word on if Martika Galvez will become as popular as Nancy Drew, Greene is confident enough in her character that she is working on at least one more book.
