‘They’re The Best Team We’ve Played So Far’ Chosen No. 1 Super Bowl Cliche

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Super Bowl XL takes place on Sunday (Feb. 5), and while others are predicting the outcome, a psychologist in Farmington Hills, Michigan, prefers to pick out the cliches.

Dr. Don Powell – who prefers to be called “Dr. Cliche” – has just come out with his list of the top ten Super Bowl cliches and says No. 1 is easily, “They’re the best team we’ve played so far,” which beats out “We need to play our best game of the year” by a nose.

Other cliches sure to be spouted this week include, “We have the utmost respect for (fill in opponent)” and, “The team with the fewest turnovers will win.”

You may find the cliches annoying and trite, but Dr. Powell sees them as “verbal comfort foods that allow sports fans to communicate in a secret language.”

But they also serve as an important tool for the players of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Seattle Seahawks by allowing them to be quoted “without inflaming the opposition.”

Journalists also benefit as well, especially those who get to hype the game by saying, “It’s a great match up.”
