According to Leron Gubler, Hollywood Chamber President and CEO, the Chamber has been inundated with calls stemming from the sale of the original Hollywoodland sign, which was replaced in 1978 and has remained in storage since then.
The original sign was purchased last month in an eBay auction for $450,000.
Gubler says every day telephone calls, e-mails and letters have come in from passionate people asking, How can you sell the sign?!
Adding more confusion, the current sign is being repainted, and one irate resident said, How dare you use someone from San Diego to paint the sign.
Gubler had to explain, Well, theyre painting it for free.
Luckily for the Chamber, the number of calls havent hindered their daily duties. Gubler says the Chamber is also in charge of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in his words, Were used to getting complaints.
