Pioneering Gastric Bypass Surgeon Gets A Taste Of His Own Medicine

SAN DIEGO (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Here’s a case of physician heal thyself: The surgeon who performed the first laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery in the U.S. is set to undergo the same procedure.

San Diego-based Dr. Wesley Clark, who weighs a hefty 280 pounds, will have the stomach shrinking surgery on Monday (Nov. 21) at San Diego’s Alvarado Hospital Medical Center.

The doctor is having the surgery because his weight is hindering his ability to stand long periods of time and perform the bypass surgery on other patients.

Dr. Clark has had five knee surgeries and has high blood pressure, sleep apnea and acid reflux.

Clark says it’s not laziness. He’s struggled with his weight for 35 years and claims genetics are to blame for his inability to shed the weight coupled with the fact that he can’t “exercise in a meaningful way anymore.”

Clark should be in good hands though. His surgeon, Dr. Julie Ellner – who says Dr. Clark has been the “model patient” – was the first surgeon he trained to do the procedure.
